“Thank you for being there” is a beginning. “Thank you for calling before my interview—I felt less alone going in” tells someone what mattered. Choose a short example, then add a true memory, an observation, or an offer you can keep.
For condolences, leave out explanations for the loss. For birthdays, center the person’s interests. For a literary quotation, keep the wording and source together and put your own thought after it.
